As the development of internet technology, various instant messaging products emerged. Currently, there are many IM systems, such as AOL IM, Yahoo IM, MSN IM, ICQ IM and OICQ IM, which based on different technology and are incompatible with each other. The emergence of XMPP/Jabber protocol has changed this situation that communication systems can’t be connected with each other. Based on XML data model, adopted distributed network system and extensible modular system architecture, XMPP/Jabber protocol’s function is easy to be extended. The emergence of IM system changed traditional e-mail dominated communication method. The IM system, especially its support to voice business, not only increases the work efficiency of enterprise employees, but also saves the communication cost. Against this background, this research paper targeted to study on XMPP protocol and its application in enterprise IM field. Based on XMPP protocol, the author built an enterprise-level IM system which includes the IM clients and server. Based on the research of CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work), the XMPP technology was applied in enterprise’s collaborative system. The text messaging service/voice service provided by IM system can realize a real-time, efficient communication between employees. The research finding indicates the enterprise-level IM system which based on XMPP can connect to users who use different IM service. Besides the text messaging service, the extended voice service provided by XMPP based IM system increased the communication efficiency between users. When we apply this technology to small and medium-sized enterprise, by building a voice communication system and managing users’ voice communication request can greatly lower the communication cost within the enterprise. The trend of IM technology’s development is to integrate the XMPP based instant Messaging technology with large office management system and operation information system such as enterprise’s collaborative system, ERP, CRM, etc.As the extensive application of internet technology and computer technology, office automation, informatization and networking have become an inevitable development trend of enterprise’s office work. As a convenient, efficient, low cost communication method, the IM which emerged in network era can not only be extensively used in people’s daily communication, but also be greatly applied in enterprise’s office work. An IM system will bring huge convenience for enterprise’s internal communication. Now the main building technology is XMPP protocol which is based on XML and used for real-time application. At first, as a framework development protocol, the target of XMPP was to support the instant messages’ transmission within the enterprise and the on-line state application. At that time, the instant message transfer network was private and was quite unsuitable for enterprise to use. For example, AOL Instant Messenger can’t be adjusted to guarantee the safe communication in company. Although there exists some business solutions, generally the fixed feature sets of them can’t be adjusted to meet the special requirements of organization. But for XMPP, which is called Jabber at first, it allows the organization to build up customize tools to promote real-time communication, and allows the third party solution to be installed. XMPP is a dispersive communication network, which means, as long as network infrastructure permits, any XMPP user can deliver messages to any other XMPP user. Several XMPP servers can communicate with each other through a special "server to server" protocol, and can create dispersive social network, thus XMPP technology will be a wise choice.
