| In modern times, with the theme of peace and development, it seems improper todiscuss military conflict. However it actually reflects an essential demand. Militarystrength is a basic hard power and attractive essence of every country at any time.Modern military strength includes direct war which matters life-and-death of a nationand threatening military drill seen as potential risks by others. The two forms are bothmedia’s focuses. This can be best proved on international sensitive countries. Forexample, Korean issues which not only concern state parties——Koreas but alsoinfluence big powers like China, Japan and America. So far this complicated issue hasbecome a centerpiece worth researching. The tenth year of the21st century has witnessed dramatic conflicts between twoKoreas. From Cheonan incident in March, the biggest military drill between Koreaand America in July, to Yeonpyeng Shelling, most international medias have keptpaying consistent attention to them. According to the author’s observation, the typesof media coverage range from timely objective report to relatively subjectivecomment. No matter hard or soft news, they all set their own agenda and hide somechoices in presenting this noteworthy event. This thesis aims to present the way in which four representative internationalmedias——China Daily, New York Times, Yomiuri Shimbun and Chosun IIbo reportthe conflicts between South and North Korea in2010. Vertical analysis, from theangle of three hot events and horizontal analysis, from the angle of four medias willbe combined to dig out the details of the four international medias in covering Koreanconflicts by researching the amount, content, priority of their reports. Finally, theauthor will also try to unveil the reasons behind the differences in their reports fromboth the historic factors and the current demands of the four birth countries of targetMedias. |
