The brightness of common backlight for LCDs is constant, leading to highpower consumption. The light leakage of LCDs leads to low contrast ratio. Thedynamic dimming technology can effectively tackle these two problems and hasbecomes a hot research topic for LCD backlights. But the existing dimmingalgorithms can not improve contrast ratio and overflow while reducing powerconsumptionBased on the detailed studies on the existing dimming algorithms and tackledthe problems of LCDs of low contrast ratio and high power consumption, as well asconsiderations on backlight development trends, the thesis proposes aS-curve-based global dimming algorithm for side-lit backlights and3localdimming ones that make a lot of research of IMF and error correction, introduce thesmoothness of the original backlight and LSF of backlight. The lots of simulationsare performed. The prototypes are developed. Both the simulation results andpractical test results show that both S-curved global dimming algorithm and3localdimming algorithms have no shortcomings of the existing algorithms and presentthe advantages of without overflow, high contrast ratio, and low powerconsumption.
