The Design And Implementation Of Media Player Based On NIOSâ…¡

Nowadays, the development of information technology is rapidly, more and moreapplications of embedded technology have covered every aspect of people’s lives, alongwith continually upgrade of CPU performance, the design field of embedded technologybecoming more widely. In the mean time, the semiconductor industry itself also stand atthe threshold of a new era, the manufacturing processes are constantly breakthroughphysical limits. With the rapid development of microelectronics technology, the chipbecomes more complexity and have higher integration, but its cost is lower than everbefore. While FPGA is being developed in the direction which with high performance, lowcost and low power consumption. This makes SOPC (System On a Programmable Chip)technology an inevitable trend.We introduced a design based on SOPC technology, which constructs a video playersystem on the Altera Stratix III (EP3SL1502252). IP reuse and hardware/softwareco-design were used to design the video player system with NIOS II core processor.We introduced this system from two aspects of hardware design and software designin detail. At first we introduced the main used SOPC technology and its developmentprocess and the FFmpeg library development. Followed by specific instructions of how wecomplete the design of the hardware platform with SOPC technology which includes themain board hardware configuration and the LCD display screen hardware configuration.In the part of software realization, we made a deep research on the transplantation ofLinux operating system based on NIOS II processor. It includes configuring systemenvironment, modifying software files, compiling and generating Linux kernel image, andeventually download to run on FPGA. Because there is no LCD display module driver inthe hardware system design tools SOPC Builder which is provided by Altera, so in thenext, we detailed the design of LCD display driver and the development process of thevideo player by using FFmpeg. In the end we tested the system and the result shows thatthe system is able to complete the intended function.
