The purpose of this research is through the design work of a MP3 player based on 32-bits embedded processor LEON2, to explore an embedded System-On-Chip (SOC) design technique and a developing platform, which fit the situation of China.Our MP3 player is designed as a SOC applying FPGA to implement and debug this system to meet the desire of"time to market"in the morden MP3 industry. Therefore we have built up the whole hardware platform and FPGA debugging environment, while optimizing the MP3 decoding performance by fosusing on improving the hardware processor.The integer unit of LEON2 embedded processor, published as open source, acts as the processor of this system, which we must further configure for our needs. To build up the hardware environment, we fully implement the AMBA AHB bus, memory interface and CODEC controller. When the system is implemented by FPGA, the software can be downloaded from our host PC, and the data can be saved in FPGA. After the decoding made by integer unit of system, audio data is sent to CODEC, then be played. The MP3 player SOC designed in this research is strongly configurable and widely expandable, which makes this SOC to fit different applications in the future.The paper first introduces the current development of MP3 playing system and the popular design methods, then analyzes the standard of the system building-up, focusing on the designing of the SOC hardwares. After that, the paper describes the design and implement of MP3 softwares based on the built-up SOC. The last part of the paper introduces the simulation and test of the whole SOC, building of the debugging platform and implementation of our MP3 player finally based on FPGA.
