Looking back to2011, dating shows occupied the golden time of manychannels. This kind of reality shows “reproduced” the process of a man and awoman getting to know each other and beginning a relationship. Althoughaudiencehave different opinions, the high audience rating surely attracted manybig TV stations to follow the tendency. As early as1988, Shanxi TV station gavethe first kind of dating show in China by <TV Match-maker>.Later Hunan TVstation became a hit. But finally these two TV shows disappeared because of theform and other reasons. But this didn’t affect the development of TV datingshows.Several years later, with the development of Internet, the grassrootsdating shows such as <If You Are The One>,<Fall in Love>,<Take Me Out>,<The Pursuit of Happiness>,<The Pursuit of Love>,<One Out of100>,<SundayBest> appeared all of a sudden, and they aroused a tide of TV dating shows.Put the future of this kind of dating shows aside, as a journalist, I reallyshould think deeply when I saw the hedonism, money worship, consumerism in these shows. On the one hand, we should notice that it is common if there areonly very few people showed this kind of thoughts, but the fact was that thereare at least70~80%participants had more or less this kind of thoughts. We’dbetter say this revealed the fact that China had entered the consumerism societythan saying that it was TV media which caused these thoughts as a catalyst. Onthe other hand, the emergency of lots of dating shows was a tendency. It wasso-called that the elite culture was transforming into secular culture, and it alsoshowed the diversity of consumption values. Besides, in the face of TV datingprograms which are filled with western consumerism, will the media be morepan-entertainment? And then cause the collapse of journalists’ responsibilitiesfor society, and then come to the falling of their credibility. All these will lead tothe bad consequence of TV industry. Entertainment programs should bringaesthetic, cultural, moral influence to the society, and the values and outlook onlife result from them.It was because audiences love dating shows so they had ahigh audience rate. Media meet the demand of entertainment is understandable, but pan-entertainment will give rise to vulgar entertainment which will harm the right to know of audience, then affect their correct values, outlook onlife, rational judgments and criticism spirits.Based on this, this essay discusses the consumerism, communication andfamily ethics, and describes the development of dating shows under aconsumerism background.
