An Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) is a Technical Manualcomposed from the start by an author using an automated (computer-controlled)authoring system designed and formatted for luminous-screen display, and which ismade interactive so that the user can take full advantage of the capability of acomputer-controlled display system for guidance in the performance of his tasks. Suchdisplay systems can also serve as communications nodes on Local Area Networks, sothat all participating activities can contribute required process information (e.g.,workstatus) in standard form, for immediate availability to other participating activities.S1000D standard is issued by the European Association of Aerospace Industries(AECMA) that dictate how such manuals are to be organized, primarily written inXML. An IETM, by its nature, contains huge amounts of complex data and can run tobe overwhelming to some users, hence decreasing their efficiency levels in using themanual and performing the task they are trying to look up. One type of such data isfault diagnosis, which is information pertaining to finding the cause of a specific faultthat can occur in the system. Hence, we would like an IETM to be adapted toindividuals according to their level of expertise, making the IETM generally, andperforming a specific fault procedure specifically, easier for non experienced users. However, S1000D standard doesn’t dictate how this information should be adapted tospecific classes of users.S1000D is a simple standard that contains mainly information about how anIETM should be structured. This simplicity made it popular among the IETMcommunity. However, S1000D doesn’t contain information about how such datashould be adapted. In this thesis we present a methodology for adaptive fault diagnosisin IETMs, a methodology that constantly adapts the fault diagnosis procedure, according to the experience of the user performing the diagnosis. We develop aframework of adaption that constantly monitors user behavior, and “learns” about the fault and its possible causes as the system is used, hence making it easier to performsuch procedures, which increase efficiency of usage of such a manual, an essentialfactor in performing fault diagnosis. We will also extend S1000D to incorporate allinformation necessary for our adaptation methodology.
