Wireless sensor network is multi-hop and self-organizing network, which is composed ofnumerous sensor nodes scattered in a certain region by wireless communication. With a very broadapplication prospects, it is widely used in military, medical, building, environmental monitoring andother fields. As one of the key technologies in wireless sensor network, routing protocol has becomethe hot topic researchers concerned in recent years. Because nodes in wireless sensor network havelimited energy and no supplement, how to effectively reduce energy consumption of the networkand prolong the life time of the network have been the main issues in routing protocol. In this dissertation, the research of routing protocol in wireless sensor network focus on energysaving. According to the relevant literature, clustering routing protocols such as LEACH haveoutstanding advantages in saving energy. Therefore, this dissertation summarises some ideas abouthow to reduce energy comsumption by the analysis of the problems in LEACH and its improvedprotocols. Based on these ideas, an energy efficient multi-hop routing protocol is proposed in thisdissertation. The protocol modifies LEACH in the cluster creation, data transmission, the updatephase of the cluster. The simulation result shows its advantages in energy saving. In addition, thisdissertation introduces a design of prototype system based on ZigBee to show the enengyperformance of routing protocol in practical application. There are detailed description of the modelstructure and related technologies of the design in this dissertation. The software and hardwaredesign scheme of its acquisition nodes, sink nodes and server are also described. In further work, the data conflict in simulation is one problem need to solve. And another is to achieve more routingprotocols to test the prototype system.
