Bearing is the basic parts and components of the mechanical equipments. Steel ball playsthe role of transfer in the working process of the bearing. Surface defect, geometric accuracy andsurface clearness of the steel ball affect the quality of the bearing directly. Therefore, it makesgreat sense to discover the defect of the steel ball.This paper makes a detail analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the variouslydomestic and international test methods of the steel ball defect. On the basis of the analysis, itputs forward a detection method which based on spherical imaging and microscopic shooting.The paper makes detail analysis of the defection mechanism and it manufactures theexperimental detection device. The equipment mainly consists of the ring LED light andmicroscope imaging system. The ring LED light is as the reference substance. It will take anarrow image on the surface of the steel ball when it put above the steel ball. The size of theimage is both decided by the distance from the ring LED light to the surface of the steel ball andthe radius of the steel ball. And then, the microscope imaging system shoots the image on thesurface of the steel ball. Through the magnification of the microscope, it can know the actual sizeof the image. With the size of the ring LED light and according to the imaging formula of thespherical mirror, it can calculate the radius of the steel ball. In this paper, it measures a set ofsteel ball whit the device. In order to improve the precision, it takes image processing to theacquired image. And the error of the experimental results is within the permission. If there’sdefect on the surface of the steel ball, the image of the ring LED light which is on the surface ofthe steel ball will takes distortion. By this way, it detects a set of steel ball which are with defect.In addition, the proposed defection system in this paper can make right evaluation to the totaldefect area, the geometric accuracy and the clearness of the steel ball.
