Energy saving of base station is an important research direction in green communication. An in-depth study on energy saving mechanism of base station is presented in this article from the following three aspects.The first aspect is about base station equipment-level energy saving technology, it is used to reduce the energy consumption or improve energy efficiency of equipments in base station. In this paper, a base station energy saving method based on cell discontinuous transmission (DTX) technique for LTE system is presented. By using cell DTX, the cell can be put into sleep mode and the PA can be turned off in certain OFMD symbols, which do not carry any user information or control signals. It is showed that, significant energy reductions can be achieved by using cell DTX technique, when the traffic load is low. In LTE system, up to60%energy reduction of PA energy consumption can be achieved.The second aspect is about base station collaborative energy saving technology, base stations can adjust the cell size according to network or traffic situation to reduce energy consumption. A base station energy saving technique based on multi-energy-levels cell zooming is proposed in this paper. The presented cell zooming algorithm can provide the possibility of choosing among several transmission power levels for cells according to traffic load, instead of a binary choice between full transmission power and sleep, as in traditional sleep modes. A system model with three types of cells is used in cellular networks and cooperation rules are made for all cells, which can simplify the collaborations between cells, and solve the competition between cells in the decision stage of cell zooming period. It is shown that, the proposed energy saving technique can be applied in any wide area cellular networks with high energy-efficient.The third aspect is about optimization of power supply system in base station. Firstly, we have a study on the present situations of power supply systems for base stations in different places. Secondly, an evaluation model for power supply system is given, which is used to evaluate the energy saving efficiency of power supply system, with the consideration of economic cost, the life cycle, energy consumption, environmental pollution, reliability of the system and so on. Thirdly, we have summarized the evolution of China’s energy structure over the years, and use the GM (1,1) model to predict future trends of China’s energy structure. Finally, the optimization schemes for power supply system in base station are given. They are proven to have significant energy conservation efficiency and considerable economic benefit in the long-term perspective.
