| In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic period, there were a large number of Chinese overseas students in Japan, however, among whom only a few came from Henan province, thus they have not been paid much attention by academia in Japanese overseas study of modern times, but they have played an important role in the national modernization. Henan overseas students in Japan were very active, organizing various associations and attending all kinds of patriotic movements, and became the backbone of Tongmenghui in Henan branch. During the time in Japan, they founded newspapers and published writings. Henan and Chinese New Women Magazine were the most influential newspapers at that time. During the days in Japan, Henan overseas students received modern education. After coming back from Japan, they made a great difference in politics, economy, culture and religion etc. which had a significant relationship with the important movements and revolutions in modern history of Henan province. This thesis selects Chinese New Women Magazine, founded by Henan overseas students in Japan, as the research object, trying to perceive the development direction of publications run by Henan students and the change of their thoughts, in order to prove the positive effects on the cultural exchange between China and Japan.Even though only published6issues, Chinese New Women Magazine was of great research value. It was not only the first-hand material about the overseas female students and Henan overseas students in Japan, but also an important material about women’s liberation movement in late Qing Dynasty. Therefore, whether from the perspective of women’s liberation or modern history of the Sino-Japan communication, it has been of great value for further analyzing Henan overseas students in Japan and Chinese New Women Magazine. The whole thesis is divided into four parts:The first part explores the social background of Chinese New Women Magazine and students sent to Japan for study. The relatively loose political environment in Japan and the fast development of female education contributed to the flourish of newspapers and magazines founded by Chinese overseas students in Japan. Chinese New Women Magazine was just the combination of the high enthusiasm of founding newspapers and women’s liberation under the background of saving country and people, and also an inevitable product of modern Chinese women’s liberation. The second part mainly introduces the main patrons and founders of Chinese New Women Magazine and talks about how Yan Bin and Liu Qingxia, the representatives of Chinese overseas students in Japan, took advantage of this magazine to report women’s situational trends, promote feminine education, encourage them to participate in and discussing state affairs. Throughout the efforts of whole magazine for women’s liberation, developing feminine education, and appealing for saving the nation from extinction, all of them were the active exploration of Henan overseas students for national rejuvenation and prosperity. The third part concentrates on the publication, distribution, content and main theme of Chinese New Women Magazine, which shows it has great historical significance for science transmission, literature and arts, the introduction of various countries. The forth part is the comparison between Chinese New Women Magazine and contemporary magazines such as Women World and Tian Yi Bao. And also it analyzes the similarities and differences between Chinese New Women Magazine and Henan, another magazine founded by Henan overseas students in Japan. Though Chinese New Women Magazine was not the most revolutionary magazine, it served as a true record of the thought trends of overseas feminine association and its requirement for women’s liberation. This thesis has taken Henan as a region to explore from the perspective of regional research. Chinese New Women Magazine, launched by Henan overseas students in Japan, is set as a basic clue to discuss Henan overseas students’important influence on modern Chinese society. But due to age and the lack of materials, this thesis exists a lot of shortcomings, and it only serves for other researchers to reference. |
