Zhuzi Yu Lei is a record of the questions and answers between Zhu Xi, the greatConfucian scholar of Song dynasty, and his disciples. It is not only a manifestation ofZhu Xi’s idealist Confucian philosophy, but also a reflection of the general social, economic, and cultural outlook of Song dynasty. The compiling of Zhuzi Yu Lei has referred to the “five records” and the “threecollections”, among which Huian xian sheng Zhu Wengong yu lu (abbreviated to ChiLu in the following texts) is one of the earliest editions of quotations from Zhuzi.Fortunately, there exist seven volumes of block-printed version of Song dynasty, and eleven volumes of transcript version of Ming dynasty, mounting fourteenvolumes, over270thousand words in total exclusive of the overlapped parts. Therefore, Zhuzi Yu Lei requires further study and research. After being carefullycollated, the Song version Chi Lu is a fine reviewed ancient book with almost no error. The Song version Chi Lu as the only existing version can be regarded as a rare bookcalling for further research with its distinguished archeological, historic and academicvalue. This thesis focuses on the study of editions and language of Zhuzi Yu Lei byemploying Chi Lu as an object of case study on the basis of fulltext comparison andproofreading between Chi Lu and Zhuzi Yu Lei. The thesis consists of five chapters. The forewords introduces the editing formation of the Yu Lus and Yu Leis, brieflyreviews the previous research done by the scholars since the beginning of20thcentury, and proposes the methodology of the thesis and its significance. The first chapter elaborates on the general situation of the fragment versions ofChi Lu of Song and Ming dynasties, its taboos, and its chronological compiling order, with specifications on those abridged versions and misarranged versions. The second chapter compares and analyzes the differences and similaritiesbetween the Song version of Chi Lu and the Ming version, and draws the conclusionthat the Song version is the original which the Ming version derives from. The latterpart of the chapter illustrates the differences between the two versions with detailed examples. The third chapter analyzes the influence of Chi Lu on the two versions of Yu Leiseparately edited by Huang Shiyi and Li Jingde, and tentatively explores therelationship between those two versions. The fourth chapter focus on the different categories of vocabularies in Zhuzi YuLei, such as the variations of diction in different versions. The fifth chapter summarizes the significance of research on Chi Lu from theperspectives of bibliography, linguistics, lexicography, and the study of Zhu Xi.The appendix lists some examples of variation in diction among Chi Lu,Huizhou version and Chenghua Version, a glossary of Zhuzi yu lei, and a samplecollating manuscript of volume38of Chi Lu.
