To protect the safety of power system operation and to achieve higher economicefficiency, more and more kinds of the parameters need to be monitored. There are manyserious defects at the acquisition, analysis and estimate of the parameters by the traditionalmeasuring method, so there need an efficient and accurate method to meet the need of thepower department and the future development. The development and application of virtualinstrument technology based on the computer technology is a approach which make thetraditional instrument changed to be the intelligent information processing system supportedby software and hardware, thus the detect of the traditional instrument is made up.In this paper, a design of power monitoring system based on virtual instrument ispresented. The system collects the information from power system by serial port usingModbus as communication protocol, and it can help the user monitor and manage thecondition of electricity consumption timely. The system is composed by the data acquisition,intelligent alarm, data management and load trend forecast4modules totally. The dataacquisition module collects the electrical parameters based on the Modbus. The intelligentalarm module includes threshold alarm module and ANN module. The threshold alarmmodule estimates the power system fault by comparing the real-time value with the alarmthreshold set previously; the ANN can learn the fault knowledge by being trained with thefault characteristic quantity, and then can be used for the power system global fault diagnosis.All of the electrical parameters can be stored, queried, updated and deleted by the datamanagement module which is based on SQL and LabVIEW database connectivity toolkit.The load trend forecast module uses the least square method to forecast the power load trend,and the power load can be adjusted reasonably according to the forecasting curve. The systemin this paper is helpful for the power system management, and has development significance.
