The city tourism is a new phenomenon of tourism has developed rapidly since the1980s.Accompanied by large tourism era, the city’s comprehensive strength enhanced, urban functions to achieve a variety of development; the city has become the unity of human material, energy, information, environment, etc, is the largest concentration of modern society, material and spiritual civilization, the most active areas, have gradually become the base of the tourism industry to survive and develop. Tourists on urban history, urban culture, urban landscape, urban style, urban entertainment, urban shopping, city life, and so has a strong tourism demand, therefore, the city became an important tourist source region and tourist destination. Urban tourism which takes the whole city as a tourist attraction element got more and more widespread concern.This article made a basic definition of the concept of urban tourism, described the characteristics of urban travel, the research progress of the city tourism at home and abroad, the concept, the principle and the function of the development of urban tourism, on the foundation of introducing the history, current situation and tourism resources in Datong,the article combed tourism development process of Datong since the reform and opening up, analysis of the reasons for the slow development of Datong tourism. Combined with large-scale urban reconstruction in Datong city to bring the opportunity for tourism development, aimed at the problems for the Datong tourism development currently, taken urban tourism development theory as a guide, the thesis focuses on how to develop urban tourism in Datong, and forecast the prospects for the development of urban tourism in Datong.The paper is divided into seven parts:the first part is the introduction on the background, meaning and content of the article; the second part systematically elaborate the basic theory of urban tourism, providing a theoretical basis for Datong to carry out urban tourism; the third part briefly introduce the history of Datong,the socio-economic and tourism resources in Datong;the fourth part divided the Datong tourism development process into two stages1978-1990and1991-2008to prove the course of its development,characteristic’s,etc.and analyze the reasons for the slow development of tourism in Datong;the fifth part mainly focuses on the basic situation of the urban renewal since2008,and analyze the possible impact of the urban regeneration to urban tourism development; the sixth part is the point of this article, focus on the main problems that the development of urban tourism in Datong city will face and prospects. According to the macro-environment of the urban tourism development, combined the favorable factors for the development of urban tourism in Datong city, and the major challenges facing in the development of urban tourism in Datong city, the paper put forward the countermeasures and suggestions; the seventh part is the end of the article, on the one hand, it judge the future development of city tourism in Datong,on the other hand, it point out the related problem that should go deep into a research further about Datong tourism development.
