With the continuous development of economic globalization and the increasing deepening of regional economic integration, the early dominant regional economy organizations, opened up by Europe and the United States and other developed countries, is becoming saturated and has lost further development potential. The center of the world economy is gradually moving toward Northeast Asia. Tumen River area is located in the heartland of the Northeast Asian region, including China, North Korea and Russia. The radiation range of economic circle could reach China, North Korea, Russia, Mongolia, South Korea and Japan. Among them, China, Japan and Korea have strong economic and technological strength and broad market. Russia and Mongolia have rich mineral resources. North Korea has the advantages of natural ports and cheap labors. Strong economic complementarity and different factor endowments among countries exist. All countries here are willing to begin developing the economy of the region under the international political situation, which makes the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area become the focus of the world once again.Based on the sub-regional economic cooperation theory, this paper analyses the research results from many scholars’ work of two decades on the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River projects, the new situation of the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area from a macroscopic perspective and the new characteristics presenting under the situation. The sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area is not only the inevitable requirement for the Manchurian Mandate in the strategy, but also an important way to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. China should play a more active role in the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area. It is of great importance to improve the investment environment in the North Korea, to strengthen the cooperation with Russia and to optimize the industrial structure. It is no doubt that the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area could bring the whole economic revival of Northeast Asia. This paper mainly includes the following aspects: The first chapter is the introductory part of the thesis, mainly narrates the historical background of the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area, the significance of the topic and literature reviews.The second chapter is the exposition of the theory of sub-regional economic cooperation, mainly explains the meaning of the regional economic integration, sub-regional economic cooperation and regional economic cooperation, clarifies the relations and differences among them, and discusses the causes and the characteristics of the sub-regional economic cooperation.The third chapter shows the development of the historical process and iconic event of the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area, including: the conceptual stage, the start-up stage, the developing stage and the breakthrough stage, then describes all the achievements we made in the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area.The fourth chapter analyzes the new international and domestic situations of politics and economics faced by China, Russia, North Korea, the European Union, the United States, Japan, South Korea in recent years and the impacts on the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area, applies the economics and trade statistics of the relevant nations and regions to make an empirical analysis of the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area, and offers predictive suggestions for the future development.The last chapter makes an outlook on the future development of the sub-regional economic cooperation of the Tumen River area and puts forward some policy recommendations.
