A New Model For MTS-MTO Hybrid Production Inventory

Abstract/Summary:
At present, MTS-MTO hybrid production pattern is widely adopted in construction machinery manufacturers. As this production pattern is very difficult to effectively forecast market demand, the production is frequently higher than the demand that causes serious overcapacity, which means inventory accumulations. Then a large number of liquidity will be occupied by lots of inventory that impacts the normal production and operation of enterprises. Therefore, implementing "de-stocking" measures has theoretical significance and practical value to construction machinery industry.On the basis of studying sufficiently several kinds of MTS-MTO hybrid production patterns, this paper designs a new type of hybrid production inventory strategy so that a new type of hybrid production inventory model (M-S-E model) can be built. The advantages of this new model are that the inventory levels can be controlled with using EPQ as a decision variable, and the service level can be improving with using final goods safety stock. Then the inventory level dependence to demand forecast can be reduced. Finally the "de-stocking" can be realized. Based on this new model, the applied research of the production-inventory system of construction machinery manufacturer S company is carried out in order to build a MTS-MTO hybrid production inventory model which conforms to actual demand of this company.Firstly, by analyzing the characteristics of market demand distribution of S company, final goods safety stock can be determined in a certain service level. And then, inventory levels change function and the total cost function of this model can be obtained. The expression of EPQ can be solved with the minimum of total cost as a goal of optimization. Sequentially, production inventory model can be built. Finally, this paper makes contrastive analysis between this model and other models from four aspects of total cost, inventory holding cost, shortage cost&production preparation cost, and the cost of production, and discusses the sensitivity of total cost to total demand in the different models.The study results show that:EPQ can make effectively the finished goods inventory to maintain reasonable levels, and optimal production cycle counts can be obtained. The two aspects can balance inventory holding cost and shortage cost&production preparation cost. Safety stock can improve effectively inventory service levels, and reduce the probability of out of stock, the losses due to out of stock and the total cost.
