The National Commercial Bank, one of Three Southern Banks in modern China’s financial history, had made a rapid development from1907to1937for its distinctive management system and business mode. With its remarkable businesses centering on loan and investment, the National Commercial Bank got more brilliant achievements in1920s than other banks of its time. After the Zhejiang Railway Company had been nationalized, the bank, the subsidiary of it, gradually extended the availability of loans to other enterprises, which led to the situation that instead of the North represented by Tianjin Branch, the South had dominated in financial circle with Shanghai head office, Hankou Branch and Hangzhou Branch at the center. Since the establishment of the national government of Nanjing, the bank had become diversified in business through a stronger intensity of direct investments and innovations, which can be well proved by its saving the rural economy in1930s. By means of loan and investing, the bank also played an important role in the development of industry and commerce, especially of the inland. Furthermore, The National Commercial Bank’s experience in the institution, business expansion and cooperation with the industry can be of great significance for today’s financial reform and bank administration.
