Xinjiang is located in the western region of China, whose economic and socialdevelopment relatively lags behind, resulting in a big gap with the central and easternregions of China. In order to eliminate the unbalanced development of regionaleconomy, it is necessary to set corresponding policy and guarantee mechanism todevelop the competitive industries in accordance with the regional advantages innatural resources and narrow the economic gap. The rural population in Xinjiangaccounts for more than80%of the whole region. In agricultural economy, cottonindustry is put in the leading position, which is considered as the basic and pillarindustry. Therefore, to develop cotton industry is to create material guarantee for theindustrialization of agriculture, modernization of rural areas as well as urbanization offarmers.This thesis is composed of five chapters, in which the author starts the researchfrom an analysis on the cotton industry in Xinjiang. Chapter one is the introduction, inwhich the author presents the background, purpose, significance, main content as wellas the methods of the research, followed by the possible innovations and limitations ofthis thesis. Chapter two gives a literature review to the studies on cotton industry inXinjiang firstly, and then provides a theoretical basis for the following chapters, withan introduction to related economic theories. Chapter three introduces the structure ofagricultural economy and the history and status quo of cotton industry in Xinjiang.Chapter four studies the growth of cotton in Xinjiang by adopting a combined methodof normative analysis and empirical analysis to analyze the data about thedevelopment of Xinjiang cotton. It is concluded that the development of cottonindustry in Xinjiang has great significance for the transformation of its dual economicstructure in spite of the deficiencies existing in cotton cultivation, circulation,processing, deep processing as well as security policy and other aspects. Chapter fivesums up analyses under the guidance of related theories in previous chapters and proposes several problems that restrict the development of cotton industry in Xinjiang.The existing problems are as follows: lacking of preferential policies; the circulationsystem is imperfect; the resource allocation is not reasonable and safeguard measuresare not sound.To solve these problems, some corresponding countermeasures and suggestionsare put forward. The emphasis is put on transforming the cotton production mode anddeveloping the small household farming into big farming with mechanizationoperation for the purpose of improving the efficiency. Besides, the author alsosuggests accelerating the establishment of the channel and mechanism, by which thecapital will be invested into cotton production and operation, and thus providingagricultural production safeguard measures for risks.
