Particles are tiny substances in divided state, with their sizes ranging from submicron tomillimeter, particles have been widely utilized in many industries. Calculation based on Miescattering theory and measurement of volume scattering function to research particlescattering properties, can be used for inversion of particle size distribution and refractiveindex, and has application significance in the field of ocean remote sensing andenvironmental monitoring.Firstly, on the basis of mie scattering theory, one dimensional and three dimensionalvolume scattering function distributions of particles whose size range from20nm to800nmare calculated numerically, on the condition of visible incident light. Also, mie scatteringcalculation principle is introduced in detail. With repeating calculation with variable initialparameters, several factors’ influences on particle volume scattering function are researched,such as the scale parameter and refractive index of particles,polarization of incident lightand polarization direction of linearly polarized light.Secondly, according to existing particle volume scattering function solution of ourresearch group, selection of core components of the measurement system is completed andthe experiment apparatus is built up. In accordance with the optical parameters of theexperiment apparatus, the calculation of light scattering patterns of sample sphere particlessizing from20nm to500nm is simulated, with incident light whose wavelength is532nm.Then the reliable expected patterns for measurement experiment are provided.Finally, using the experiment apparatus built up, the scattering patterns of sampleparticles sizing both in57.7nm and193.8nm are measured, and compared with ideal result.Then the relationship between results of particle scattering properties and parameters likepolarization properties of incident light and particl diameter is analyzed. Based on theexperiment result, the experiment apparatus and measurement solution are optimized andimproved.
