Mineral resources provide for the economic construction of China and maintainChinese people’s life. With the exploitation of the resources come increasing geologicalhazard problems, such as landslides, collapses, subsidence, environmental pollutions,which have posed a threat to the rapid development of mineral cities as well as people’slives in surrounding areas. At present, the management of geological hazards has gainedmore and more attention from both home and abroad. According to insufficient statistics,the direct economic loss on mineral areas caused by geological hazards is over RMB30billion yuan every year, which makes it imperative to conduct the comprehensivemanagement of geological hazards and related research on the geological environmentbecause it has real significance.Haizhou Open-cast Mine was once the biggest open-cast mine in Asia, as well as thewell-known large-scaled open-cast mine world. It was first exploited in July,1953andclosed in July,2005. It is also the first closed large-scaled open-cast mine in China at thattime. After the closure, a pit with an area of6km2and the maximum depth of350metersremained and caused a series of geological problems, such as the landslides, thespontaneous combustion of coals, the subsidence of surrounding areas, having a badinfluence on environment and people’s lives. According to the plan, the relics of HaizhouOpen-cast Mine will remain in the form of geological park. The comprehensivemanagement of Haizhou Open-cast Mine will bring obvious economic, environmental andsocial benefit. The thesis elaborates on the natural geological conditions, the geologicalstrata, types, characteristics and manifestations of geological hazards, brings forward theobjectives, tasks and significance of the management of geological hazards, proposespossible and detailed management measures according to different types of geologicalhazards, makes an objective evaluation on the effect of management based on datacollected from research, geological survey, type analysis, comparative study ofmanagement measures, technical means and data monitoring to build a whole systemfrom the preparation, management to the final evaluation, so as to provide scientificmethods and reference for environmental protection, promoting ecological harmony, aswell as the geological hazard management.
