A Faunal Remain Analysis at Liuzi Canal Site, Anhui Liuzi Canal Site is locatedat Baishan Zhen, Huaibei, Anhui Province. As the first excavation of the Great Canal,the importance is self-evident both in terms of archaeological research and culturalheritage management. During the years2012-2013, Institute of Archaeology in AnhuiProvince continued the excavation, in which a great deal of faunal remains wasdiscovered and systematically collected. The chronology is able be divided into fourphases according to stratigraphy and artifact characteristics, including Late TangDynasty, Former Song, Later Song (Jin) Dynasty, and Ming-Qing Dynasties. Here Iwill report the result of the morphological analyses, including taxa, age of death, andmodification by natural and human agency. Then I will do a comparison study todistinguish buffaloes from cattle based on contemporary samples. The final part is thediscussion about the specific issues, including the exploitation of animal resourcesand the importance of trade for the rise of Liuzi Town based on the result ofidentification and statistics of faunal remains and historical documents.
