As a high-energy beam machining technology, abrasive water jet is considered to bethe priorities of development in cutting technology at the21st century. it is difficult tomachine by the conventional machining processes,such as composite materials and brittlematerials. Abrasive water jet own unique advantage wich can overcomes these faults.However, the cutting cross-section strips make the surface quality worse, which limitsthe application of the technology. In order to explore the application, this paper proposes anew cutting cross-section strips formation mechanism and through experiment verificationit. In addition, there is little studies finished on the material removal mechanism, so it isnecessary to explore.Based on the abrasive particles density distribution in the jet cross-section, with thefluid dynamics and jet dynamics knowledge, the abrasive particles energy distribution inthe jet cross-section has been drawn. Through microscope observe the cuttingcross-section of alumina ceramic and mold steel, which respectively represent brittlematerials and plastic material, further explore the material removal mechanism of abrasivewater jet. Quantitative research on the cutting depth of the work piece when abrasivewater jet vertical cutting and oblique cutting, establish the model analyzing the results,point out that the relationship between cutting angle and utilization rate of jet energy.Studying the existing cutting cross-section stripes formation mechanism, analyzingthem through experiment phenomenon and experiment conclusions. Based on the abrasiveparticles energy distribution, the material removal mechanism and cutting angle withutilization rate of jet energy, establish the geometry model about the cutting cross-sectionchanging, proposing a new cutting cross-section strips formation mechanism and throughexperiment verification it.Based on the strips formation mechanism, establish the model studying the bendingmechanism of the strips. Meanwhile, according to experimental phenomena, application ofthe strips bending will be proposed and the relationship between machining parametersand the bending radius of strips has been researched. Through experimental research, the paper reveals the reason that strips formation atthe cutting cross-section. The results of the paper are useful for machining.
