The ultraviolet ray (UV) coating, which exhibits a special solidification way, hasbeen the focus of wide attention due primarily to its lustrous and bright appearance, high hardness, and its potential for energy conservation. Furthermore, the coatingcomponent contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC), making it competitive inenvironmental protection. Although the UV coating possesses some favorableperformances, its corrosion resistance is relatively poor. For this reason, thesolidification process, failure mechanism, and the improvement method wereinvestigated with the purpose of enhancing the corrosion resistance. The obtainedresults are as follows.1. Appropriate technological parameters for the solidification of UV coating weredetermined by analyzing the composition and the process of the coating.2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method and the imageacquisition technology were employed to clarify the failure mechanism. It is foundthat the adhesive force between the coating and the metallic substrate decreased in3.5%NaCl solution, when the H2O molecules diffused to the interface between metaland organic coating. Then a larger amount of electrolyte solution spread to theinterface region. Finally, the corrosion reaction between the coating and metallicsubstrate would occur, when the corrosive medium at the interface regionaccumulated to a certain concentration. A further soak process will lead to thebubbling and peeling of the coating.3. The component of the solidification coating was changed, and an improvementof corrosion resistance was obtained in the coating containing5%corrosion inhibitor,in which only a small number of corrosive spots were observed. Hence, it is believedthat the addition of corrosion inhibitor has a positive effect on the corrosionresistance.
