Indexable milling cutter plays an indispensable role in many different metal-cuttingindustries because of its superior cutting function. With the addition of the kinds ofworkpiece which can be processed by indexable cutters, the types of tool cuttersincreased. Indexable disk-type milling cutter is the main kind tool to process the spiralcurve of screws in the world. The comprehensive abiliy of a indexable disk-type millingcutter is influented by many factors, such as the form of the tool piece, how smooth isthe lap jointment of the tool pieces, the structure of tool body, how proper is theformation of tool pieces groove and chip removal grooves, and so on.In China, indexable disk-type milling tool is used to process different types ofspiral curves, including the curve of compressor screws. There are many shortages whenthe milling tool used in practice because of the limited development of mechanicalindustry, the bad property of present tool materials, the undeveloped of optimizddesignation of this kind of tool in our country. This paper aims at the unusual damage ofthe milling too to design and simulate an useful indexable disk-type milling tool.Firstly, the theory of how to form a spiral curve is comprehensively analyzed. Thena mathematics model about the screw curve and disk-type milling tool outline is built.According to the relative movement relation, the model transfers the information ofscrew to milling tool mathematically. It is the theoretical foundation of the milling tooloutline designation.Secondly, the milling tool outline for certain spiral curve can be formed by meansof the dedicated software SCCAD according to the spatial formation movementbetween the tool and screw. A new milling tool outline, which meets the conditions oferror limit, can be drawn by adjusting the tool placement and revising the tool edge ofcutter pieces. The new tool appears when all the cutter pieces well-distributed aroundthe tool body.Thirdly, different cutting conditions in different front angle is analyzed by the FEMsoftware DEFORM-3D. How the front angle influences the main cutting force, and thevariety of the stress effective area in different front angle is contrasted to get areasonable cutting front angle, which can be the result of the paper.Finally, making experiments with the tool designed in the paper, compare thecutting result with that of the old milling tool. According to the quality of the workpieceand the wearout of the tool pieces, the advantages of the new-designed tool appears.
