Phenolic resin as a good performance of the materials are used in manyindustries, to meet the automotive, electronics, aviation, aerospace and defenseindustry and other high-tech fields required, improve the application performance ofmodified phenolic resin has become an important development direction. Tall oilmodified phenolic resin is synthesized in two phase and modified by tall oil, one ofthe most important use is as a rubber reinforcing additives, especially for theautomobile tire rubber application, every year around the world, the amount hasexceeded15,000tons. However, the residual free phenol in phenolic resin isimpacting the living beings and environment, phenol has great toxicity, easy to causecorrosion and stimulation, too much exposure to phenol vapor can make centralnerve palsy and lead to life-threatening, a small amount of inhaled will also affectthe bodys liver and kidney function.As people pay more and more attention to the environmental protection, manyinternational large-scale transnational tire enterprises have already been aware ofhow to produce the product of green environmental protection importance, inparticular, Michelin, Pirelli and Goodyear tire enterprises represented by Europe andthe United States, have began to improve the material standard at the end of thetwentieth Century, and have required to control free phenol content is less than1.0%in reinforced phenolic resin. So in order to meet the needs of such, Europe and theUnited States phenolic resin manufacturers have started very early on how to quicklyand effectively reduce the synthetic resin of free phenol content, and have made avery mature technology to control the reasonable specification. While in China,although the Chinese tire output has reached about1/3of world total output, and theannual amount for production and consumption also more than5000tons as tall oilmodified phenolic resin, but since the industry started relatively late, we usually takeless than5.0%as factory index. Even if part of domestic phenolic resin productionenterprises can produce free phenol content slightly low product, their productioncapacity is limited for inefficiency and higher cost, so it is necessary to do in this respect actively explore.This study is focused on how to quickly reduce residue the free phenol contentin tall oil modified phenolic resin, the gas chromatography with smaller gage R&R asa test of free phenol method. It just to research to improve production efficiencyoptions through using the improved phenolic molar ratio, by increasing the amountof X organic acid. Increasing reaction temperature, vacuum distillation, steamstripping, is the main method to reduce the free phenol content in the product. Thisresearch special put forward try to use steam stripping to reduce the product of freephenol content, and through the properties evaluation methods to validate thismodel processing technology rationality. The phenol content decreased to about1/10of the average product after steam stripping treatment, not to cause substantialinfluence on application performance, especially in the vulcanization efficiencyperformance is also better than the compared samples, so it is an ideal method toreduce finished product of free phenol content. Practice also shows that vacuumdistillation process to have similar effect, but its efficiency isn’t enough. Therefore,rational and combined use of steam stripping and vacuum distillation process will bethe next step research focus for us.
