Removal of the plumule from the lotus kernels is an important procedure in theprocess of lotus seeds. With the rapid growth of market demand of lotus seeds, thetraditional way of removal by hand will be definitely replaced by machines. There arelots of kernels crushed in the process of removing by automatic plumule removalmachines in existence, and this increases the spoilage of kernel in the processing andblemishes the appearance of products. In order to solve this problem, the physicalmechanism and the cutting property are analysed theoretically and experimented inthis paper in order to figure out the regulation of influence to the crushing of lotuskernels by the physical mechanism characteristic, the geometric parameters of cuttingtools and the cutting process parameters, and provide theoretical basis for thedevelopment of high quality and automatic kernels plumule removal machine. Majorwork of this paper is as follows:1) Menstruated the geometrical, physical and mechanical parameters of lotuskernel, obtained the distributions of diameter, length, curvature, etc., attained theprecise density, moisture content, hardness and compression strength of lotus kernel,analyzed the relationship between moisture content, hardness and compressionstrength, provided the material parameters for the processing of lotus kernel.2) Based on the metal cutting theory, beginning with the simple2-dimensioncutting model, this paper made a deduction on the theoretical calculation formula ofthe axial force and torque of kernel cutting, revealed the main factors which influencethe cutting force, and calculated the cutting force and torque of removal of kernelplumule under different cutting conditions.3) Based on software UG, established the3-dimension models of lotus kernel andtwist drill, analysed the kernel plumule removal process with the AdvantEdge cuttingsimulation software, revealed the variation curve of cutting force, torque andtemperature under different cutting conditions and the plastic strain diagram,analyzed the influence of different cutting process parameters to the quality of kernelplumule removal, seeked out the regulation of crushing of kernels, and preliminarilyverified the correctness of the theoretical model.4) Using the orthogonal experiment and with Kistler rotation dynamometer, thispaper tested the regulation of influence to the cutting force and torque in the processof kernel plumule removal by parameters of spindle feed, rotation rate of the principal axis, diameter of boring bit and apex angle of boring bit, etc., and found out the limitparameters of crushing of lotus kernels. Comparing the testing result with that oftheoretical calculation and numerical simulation, this paper found that the threeresults were basically consistent, consequently verified the correctness of mechanicalmodel and finite element simulation.
