The treatment of VOCs by absorption combined with iron-activated carbon microeletrrolysis was experimentally investigated. The experiment was implemented with a tube reactor filled with iron mash, activated carbon powder and iron-activated carbon combination, respectively. All the fillings were immerged in acidic water solution. The gas stream containing toluene or trichloroethylene (TCE) was introduced to the reactor from the bottom of the reactor, and flowed through the Fe-C micro-electrolysis zone, and then discharged from the top of the reactor. The influences of fillings such as iron mash, activated carbon powder and iron mash-activated carbon combination, as well as the operation parameters on VOCs removal were investigated. The mechanism of Fe-C micro electrolysis was also investigatedExperimental result showed that both toluene and TCE were effectively removed by absorption combined with Fe-C microelectrolysis. The removals of toluene and TCE increased with the decrease of pH value of the solution. The optimal mass ratio of iron mash to activated carbon was selected for VOCs removal. Under an operation condition of water200mL, pH2.5, air input150mL·min-1, activated carbon powder1.5g, and iron mash25.0g, The removals of toluene and TCE with a same initial concentration of600mg-m-3were52.26%and36.92%, respectively. It was found that the removal toluene was higher with steel mash-activated carbon than that with iron powder-activated carbon powder as a microelectrolytic system. After reaction, benzoic acid was detected in solution by ultraviolet spectrum for toluene removal. The existence of chloridion in solution was proved for the dechlorinating of TCE by Fe-C microelectrolysis by ultraviolet spectrum.
