Al2O3Ceramic cutting tools have high hardness, excellent wear resistance,good thermal stability, and good machinability, and many other advantages,the rawmaterial to make ceramic cutting tools is low price and rich source,so it will has awide range of application prospects in the cutting tool field. But its large brittleness,lower strength, and welding difficulty limiting its scope of application, Especially forpure alumina ceramic cutting tool,so it not widely used, Thus toughening of ceramiccutting tools has been the research emphasis and difficulty of ceramic cutting toolindustry.The way by adding various carbide(such as TiC,SiC,WC) in ceramic materialsto particle dispersion toughening, after hot pressing sintering,it can be enhancedstrength and toughness. But this way to its performance improvement is limited, doesnot meet the requirements of modern cutting technology. This paper introduces theideas of the biomimetic laminated to the development of ceramic cutting tool design,successful create Al2O3-TiB2/Al2O3-TiC biomimetic laminated composite ceramiccutting tools, and the mechanical properties, microstructure and cutting performancehave be research.TiC and TiB2and Al2O3has a good chemical compatibility, and there was solittle difference between their thermal expansion coefficient. But TiB2has a highercoefficient of thermal conductivity and hardness than TiC, so this article throughbiomimetic laminated design,useing Al2O3/TiB2as surface,and Al2O3/TiC as anintermediary, by adjusting the TiB2and TiC in different ratio of Al2O3,and thethickness of each layer are different, make the Al2O3ceramic cutting tool surface hasresidual compressive stress, and to improve its performance. Based on the ratio of rawmaterial, extrusion process, and different layer thickness ratio and the thickness ofeach layer three aspects to design and improvement the mechanical properties ofAl2O3-TiB2/Al2O3-TiC ceramic cutting tools.Cutting performance of the biomimetic laminated composite ceramic cuttingtools were compared with the ordinary ceramic cutting tool when cutting45#hardenedsteel,and biomimetic laminated ceramic tool wear performance were analyzed. Experiments show that: The biomimetic laminated ceramic cutting tool abrasionresistance, impact resistant performance is superior to the ordinary ceramic cuttingtools.
