The exposure to moisture, oxygen and corrosive media can easily cause corrosion of metal when the steam turbine units work. This phenomenon will lead to excessive worn and downtime or lead to safety incidents, which could cause serious damage. The rust resistance is one of the most important properties of turbine oil because it can ensure that the steam turbine unit works normally. Therefore, study of the base oil and additives on the anti-rust performance of turbine oil is of great significance.In this research, the chemical composition of different base oils were analyzed by mass spectrometry analysis and the results showed that the chemical composition of different base oils was quite different. By preparative chromatography, saturated hydrocarbons, aromatics and polar substances were separated from hydrogenated base oils. The anti-rust performance of each component was examined, with results showing that aromatics in base oil have a negative impact on the anti-rust property of turbine oil. Resin fraction contains more carbonyl groups, which can function to improve anti-rust performance of turbine oil. The anti-rust performance of turbine oil complex agents and commonly-used antirust additives were invetigated, and results showed that antirust additives had different anti-rust performance in different base oils whose composition were varied from each other. It was also found that antirust performance of turbine oil could have negative effects on anti-emulsifying property. The metal adsorption properties were studied for different types of rust inhibitors by attenuated total reflectance (ATR) method and contact angle test, and the anti-rust properties of molecules containing carbonyl groups were inclined to be better.
