Study On Furniture Development Of Northeast China In The20th Century

As an indispensable part of China, Northeast region gave birth to the brilliant black earth culture, which is one of the most precious treasures of Chinese culture. Compared to other parts of this country, it has different geographical conditions, history, economic level, and regional culture. Due to all these facts, distinguishing local furniture was developed in the Northeast region.In this paper, the "Northeast China" refers to Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, as well as the eastern edge of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, taking the Yanshan Mountains in North China as the boundary between Northeast and Central China.The furniture of northeast China in the20th century was analyzed from four aspects in this paper in the context of time. First, at the basis of extensive collecting and reading literature data, wide range of detailed field researches in Harbin, Qiqihar, Jiamusi, Changchun, Yanbian, Shenyang, Jinzhou, Huludao etc. were carried out. And then the information of northeast region furniture was analyzed, sorted, screened. Secondly, through case studies and induction of different types of furniture via horizontal and vertical comparison, the development course of northeast region furniture was divided into three stages:the first half of the20th century (early20th century-1949), form the founding of the PRC to the reform (1949-1978), and the furniture of northeast China after the reform and opening up (1978-early1990s). The characteristics of these three stages furniture were described. Thirdly, a more comprehensive and inductive analysis about the influencing factors and industry dynamics of each stage was conducted. After this, the impacts of socio-economic, culture and many other factors for the development of furniture were revealed. Finally, the development and features of Northeast China furniture in the20th century were summarized from the view of social development.Research shows that half of the furniture in20th century’s northeastern China was traditional furnishings. At the same time, they had got incentives enrichment and development under the influence of mainly in Western-style furniture, and new furniture styles emerged. After the founding of PRC., furniture experienced civilianization, mechanization, functionalization, simplification. Especially after the reform, people with open thoughts in the Northeast pay more attention to the improvement of their own lives and the digestion and absorption of the "bringing in". Furniture industry has achieved magnificent transfiguration from a semi-manual, semi-mechanized cottage to modern mechanized production; from the traditional framework to the package insert panel structure in the furniture structure, forming a furniture production mode based on the plate fitment manufacturing. Till1990s, more and more materials and styles were introduced in northeast furniture making, but obvious homogenization has shown already.
