The phenolic resin, which is one of the three thermosetting resins(phenolic resin, epoxyresin, unsaturated polyester resin), has found an increasingly wide utilization in industrialfield for its cheap raw material, the simple synthesis process and the excellent properties.With the development of the modernization, more and more new requests have been putforward to improve the application performance of the phenolic resin. But the generalphenolic resin has been limited in some industrial field for its defects in the heat resistance,the toughness and the water resistance. Therefore, it is important to study the heat resistance,the toughness and the water resistance of the phenolic resin.In this paper, the phenolic resin, which was modified by tung oil and the nanometeraluminium oxide, was prepared with high thermal stability, the toughness and the waterresistance, using phenol and formaldehyde as the raw materials, and the toluene-p-sulfonicacid, barium hydroxide as the catalysts. Orthogonal experiment was used to select the bestexperiment conditions to synthesize the phenolic resin.(a) the best conditions of the phenolicresin modified by tung oil is the temperature of the first step104℃, ammonium tung oilcontent of14%, time of2h, the temperature of the second step is95℃, time of4h, the moleratio of the phenol and the formaldehyde is1:1.2;(b) the best conditions of the phenolic resinmodified by the nanometer aluminium oxide is the temperature95, ammonium the nanometeraluminium oxide content of0.6%, time of4h, the mole ratio of the phenol and theformaldehyde is1:1.2;(c) the best conditions of the phenolic resin modified by tung oil andthe nanometer aluminium oxide is the temperature of the first step104℃, ammonium tung oilcontent of14%, time of2h, the temperature of the second step is95℃, ammonium thenanometer aluminium oxide content of0.4%, time of4h, the mole ratio of the phenol and theformaldehyde is1:1.3.The modified phenolic resin structure and morphology were characterized by the infraredspectra and SEM. The analysis results show that the flexible chain of tung oil and the particlesof the nanometer aluminium oxide were successfully grafted on the molecule of phenolicresin. The gravimetric analysis shows that the modified phenolic resin is better than ordinaryphenolic resin in heat resistance, the toughness and the water resistance.
