Micro-drill with planar flank point is prevalent in stainless steel drilling. But heat dissipationand drill tip strengthen become serious, due to high toughness and poor heat conductivity of thismaterial. Novel drill point is developed by experiment study of the characteristics of the drillingbehavior. Tool life tests for drills with different geometry parameters, including relief angle, pointangle, and flute helix angle, are investigated. The results demonstrate that the optimized drill pointis improved in wear resistance. The force and torque are reduced due to thinning of chisel edgelength. The results demonstrate that the optimized drill point with modified rake angle distributionis improved in wear resistance. The tool life is enhanced through reduced chipping by honing thecutting edge. Industrial on-line tests demonstrate the drill life is improved by50%in comparisonwith that of conventional micro drill. |
