Today, the world economy develops rapidly. The inadequate supply of energy, especially the petroleum gradually becomes the topic of most concern. The establishment of the oil reserves is a major measure to solve this problem in the case of increasing dependence on foreign oil, but the consequent security problems of large oil storage tank issues have become the thorniest problem at present.In view of the current situation of China’s energy reserves and the security issues, this paper puts forward a method of acoustic emission detection technology, introduces the basic principle of acoustic emission testing technology and its classification of signals. Commonly used acoustic emission signal source localization methods of burst type signal and continuous type signal are listed, and several plane location methods of the burst signal are introduced in the text. This paper makes a preliminary validation for the accuracy and reliability of the acoustic emission inspection methods positioning technology, and paves the way for the later experiments by analog source positioning accuracy analysis and wave velocity measurement experiments.This paper carries out an on-site inspection for one crude oil storage tank in Huangdao depot using acoustic emission testing technology. The whole detection process is in strict accordance with the standards, including the preparatory work of the document review and site survey, the basic situation of the storage tank, the choice of testing instruments, scheme determination, the installation of sensors, the background noise of the test and the sensitivity of the test. Many abnormal signals are eliminated in the process of detection to obtain more effective acoustic emission data signal. Testing revealed that the tank corrosion is slight and there is few concentrated active region. It can be deduced that the tank has several active defects, which can be for acoustic emission detection after2-3years. Acoustic emission testing still belongs to a relatively new testing technology in the tank detection. In order to verify the validity and accuracy of acoustic emission testing results, we carry out comprehensive ultrasonic testing for this storage tank. Through comparative analysis of testing, results of acoustic emission detection technology and ultrasonic detection are consistent, which have showed that acoustic emission testing technology can be used to determine the storage tank corrosion degree as well.
