3-D woven carbon fiber composites are of lightweight, high stiffness, high strength, and excellent fatigue performance characteristics, with a wide range of applications. To take full advantage of the3-D woven carbon fiber composites, its mechanical properties must be understood. As the structure of3D woven composites is more complex, the present study on the mechanical properties of3-D woven composites is still not enough, especially for the impact resistance of3-D woven carbon fiber composites. The project explored the impact resistance and failure modes of3-D angle interlock woven composite and3-D orthogonal woven composite in two ways incuding test method and the finite element method. The project expanded the following work:(1) The carbon fiber3-D orthogonal and3-D angle interlock fabrics are woven on the3-D loom, and the3-D woven carbon fiber plate composites are fabricated by Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding, then these composites were cut into test pieces.(2) The ballistic penetration tests were finished on those test pieces. Recording every incident velocity and injection speed of the bullets in the test, the test data was converted into a ballistic penetration characterization metrics. Then transferred the ballistic penetration characterization metrics into graphs. The mechanical properties of3-D angle interlock woven composites and3-D orthogonal woven composites were compared. The analysis showed that the3-D orthogonal woven carbon fiber composites are more resistant to penetration than3-D interlock woven composites.(3) The dimension of3-D woven carbon fiber composites models wre calculated by the macroscopic parameters of3-D woven carbon fiber composites, and used these dimensions can uniquely identify a microscopic structure model. Based on these dimensions, the microstructure of3-D woven carbon fiber composites models were established in the software UG. Then imported those the models into finite element software ANSYS.The pre-treatment including defining materials, meshing, constrainting, applying load in ANSYS.Then using the software LS-PREPOST to extract the results, including the speed value, stress maps, damage maps. The data of speed was converted into a ballistic penetration characterization metrics. Then transferred the ballistic penetration characterization metrics into graphs. The mechanical properties of3-D angle interlock woven composites and3-D orthogonal woven composites were compared. The analysis showed that the3-D orthogonal woven carbon fiber composites are more resistant to penetration than3-D interlock woven composites.(4)The failure modes of3-D woven composites were explored. The damage mainly included compression, shear failure, besides the tensile failure also accounted for a certain percentage, the opposite side was mainly about tensile failure, while the back has a lot of fibers pulled out.
