Hunan, the place of origin for Yao Nationality, is called the cradle and old location of Yao Nationality. Based on the Fifth Survey of Chinese Population in2000, the population of Yao Nationality is estimated to be710,000, accounting for11%of the whole Hunan Minority population and29%of the whole Yao Nationality population in China, with the South-west of Hunan being the most populous place of Yao Nationality. The clothing of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan is bright and colorful, which is the most characteristic one among all the minority clothing. Because of the differences in its living environments, customs and habits as well as its unique styles, the clothing of Yao Nationality is of high research value.In recent years, as many experts and scholars have realized the importance and significance of protecting the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan, they are taking an active part in researching and protecting the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan, and they also have had a lot of pertinent protective measures and suggestions. However, along with the trendy process of globalization and modernization, the survival space for the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan meets great threat. As a result, the cultural legacy with Yao Nationality characteristics is on the verge of extinction and in the danger of being lost. Therefore, the most formidable and urgent task for the time being is how to effectively sort out, protect, inherit and innovate the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan. This essay focuses on the thoughts of how to apply digital technology to deeply dig, sort out, protect, inherit and innovate the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan. That is to say, merging cultural digging, protecting, inheriting and applying into a whole, with the help of digital technology, we need to strive to protect and inherit the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan which is close to disappearance but is of great historic value, with emphasis on the research of digital promotion of Yao Nationality clothing and application research of innovative design.The first part of the thesis mainly expounds the origin of the selected theme, research background, and the analysis of the present domestic and foreign research about this, explaining the original point of the research, exploring the research contents of the selected theme and the value and significance of this thesis research.The second part of the thesis interprets the delimitation of the regions for the Yao Nationality clothing in the South-west of Hunan, and the branches of Yao Nationality clothing. It also delimits the concept and classification of digital promotion. Some basic theoretic research on the problems existent in digital protection of Yao Nationality clothing is mentioned as well.The third part of the thesis talks about the digital protection research and inheritance of the clothing culture of Yao Nationality in the South-west of Hunan. In other words, this part narrates how to digitally promote Yao Nationality clothing culture based on its originally static and plane protection. On the basis of digital technology, a research is done on the new methods, new measures of digital promotion and the function and meaning of this promotion is also generalized.The fourth part of the thesis recounts the application research of the innovative design of Yao Nationality clothing in the South-west of Hunan. An analysis is done on the inherent meaning and aesthetic value of Yao Nationality clothing culture. An innovative design research is also performed about the clothing souvenirs for travelers based on the elements and resources of Yao Nationality.The fifth part is a conclusion, putting forward the author’s own thoughts and future developing directions for the research contents of this thesis.
