The paper investigates corona discharge treatment on the surface properties andprintability of polypropylene film. By means of scanning electron microscope (SEM),atomic mechanics microscope (AFM) and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), coronatreatment of polypropylene (PP) film surface chemical molecular structure andphysical characteristics changes were analyzed. By using JC2000C1static contactangle and interfacial tension meter, the critical surface tension test fluid, ink adhesiveforce and ink abrasion resistance test and other test evaluation methods, differentprocess conditions of the experimental sample were detected and evaluated. Accordingto the comprehensive analysis of experimental results, the optimal corona processingpolypropylene film on the basis of the current equipments was obtained.(1) Under the effect of high voltage electric field, the electron flow has the strongimpact on polypropylene film. It makes the film surface becoming rough and havinghigher surface tension than that of the original polypropylene film.(2) It is concluded that corona-treated PP film can cause Molecular bond ruptureand the production of a number of different free radicals and unsaturated center. Inaddition,the unsaturated center of superficial surface can adsorb water in the air andcrosslink resulted in the increase of oxygen in the surface and the improvement ofsurface wet ability.(3) After the corona treatment, the surface tension of PP film increased from32dyne/cm to42dyne/cm by31%degree, implying that the corona treatment canimprove the surface wet ability and printing adaptability of PP film.(4) Based on the test and analysis results of the adhesion and robustness ofdifferent sample, it can be found that the printing ink adhesion and robustness can beimproved greatly after corona treatment. Hence, this experiment result demonstratesthat the corona treatment is beneficial to increasing the roughness of membrane surfaceand improving the printing adaptability of the film surface.
