Succinic acid is the intermediate product of tricarboxylic acid cycle and has a wide application in various industries. At present, the production of succinic acid mainly relies on chemical synthesis, which is costly and environmentally harmful. On the contrary, the fermentation method to produce succinic acid is being given much attention due to its environmental-friendly and material renewable nature. For fermentation to produce succinic acid, the cost of succinic acid separation from broth takes60-70percent of the total succinic acid production costs. So seeking cost effective separation method is of great significance to the industrialization of succinic acid production by fermentation. This paper gives a brief introduction to the succinic acid production, application and the methods to separate acid from fermentation broth. This study focused on the separation of succinic acid from simulated fermentation broth and fermentation broth by combining crystallization and reactive extraction. For simulated fermentation broth, the succinic acid yield can reach81.25%with purity surpass95%after crystallization(at0℃), extraction (using organic solvents of tri-n-octylamine:octanol=3:7), reextraction(using sodium hydroxide at95℃). For fermentation broth, the succinic acid yield is80.12%with purity surpass98%applying the same separation process, except that the fermentation broth has to be pretreated with centrifugation and decolorization using activated carbon.
