Along with the improvement of people’s environmental awareness, intumescent flame retardant (IFR) have attracted considerable attention in recent years because they are very environmentally friendly. IFR systems contain three active ingredients:an acid source [e.g. ammonium polyphosphate (APP)], a carbonization agent (e.g. pentaerythritol), and a blowing agent (e.g. melamine). However, APP has some weaknesses such as weak water resistance and low compatibility with organic materials, pentaerythritol and melamine also have many disadvantages such as bad thermal stability, higher water absorption and large additive amount, all these problems will lead a decrease in the properties of the polymer composites. In order to overcome these problems, microencapsulation of APP is a good choice. Melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin is used in microencapsulation of APP, polyethylene glycol and resorcinol are used to modify the MF resin. The modified products are characterized by SEM, water solubility test and TG analysis, it turned out that microencapsulation gives products better water resistance, and more final amount of residual carbon. Intumescent flame retardants is compounded by microencapsulation products, pentaerythritol and melamine, when the mass ratio of microencapsulation products, pentaerythritol and melamine is3:1:1, the IFR have the best performance in in flame retardant property, but the mechanical property has decreased a lot because of the pentaerythritol and melamine. Meanwhile, a new triazine polymer (CFA) was synthesized by using cyanuric chloride as raw material, characterized by FTIR, water solubility test and TG analysis, it turned out that CFA has better water resistance and thermal stability compared with pentaerythritol. A new kind of intumescent flame retardant is compounded by CFA and microencapsulation products which has better flame retardant property and mechanical property. The achievements of project have provided theoretical basis and guide to modify the disadvantages of IFR.
