Dunaliella salina, which is originally grouped in the class of Chlorophyceae, the order of Volvocales, is a kind of eukaryotic unicellular organism without cytoderm. Dunaliella salina is a green alga with simple construction, high photosynthetic efficiency, fast proliferation and high salt resistance. It always grows in salt lake, salina, ocean, etc.In this paper, two applications of Dunaliella salina were studied.(1) The extraction and purification of βcarotene from Dunaliella. Pcarotene, a kind of saffron fat-soluble natural pigment, is widely spread in nature. Pcarotene, especially9-cis-carotene, one of the isomers, play an important role in body’s physiological function. The proportion of9-cis-β-carotene and all-trans-β-carotene in Dunaliella is almost nearly1:1。 In this paper, organic solvent extraction, Column chromatography, etc, are prepared to extract and purify β carotene. The content of β-carotene is measured to determine the best condition of extraction quantity. (2) The preparation of biofuel. Dunaliella salina is easy to cultivate and the biomass accumulation period is short, so it can accumulate biomass in a short time. The approach of generating bioenergy by biomass:directly burning, preparation of hydrogen and methane, preparation of ethanol, preparation of biodiesel, etc.. Dunaliella salina can be prepared for biodiesel by esterification and transesterification, because Dunaliella salina is rich in oil (mainly triglycerides). In this paper, biodiesel is prepared by organic solvent oil, sulfuric acid catalytic esterification, sodium hydroxide catalytic transesterification. Take19th alkanes acid methyl ester as internal standard to calculate the content of fatty acid methyl ester. The best condition of transesterification can be determined by biodiesel level.
