With the rapid development of industrial property, industrial additives are widelyused in many industries of rubber, printing and dyeing, processing and production ofwood furniture, paint production. Industrial additives has a lot of species, most of theingredients contain benzene and its homologues. Benzene and its homologues havebeen identified as a strong carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO),long-term inhalation of high concentrations of benzene and its homologues, can causedizziness, headaches, insomnia and memory loss, and blood diseases. In order toreduce the benzene and its homologues hazards for workers, we need to clearlyingredient the industrial additives and effective monitoring. The state has developedoccupational health exposure limits for benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene andstyrene and other harmful ingredients, but it is still a lack of qualitative analysis in theindustrial additives. The research analysis the industrial additives by headspace GC-MS, usingspectral libraries with the instrument alignment,self-built standard spectral librarycomparison, and self-built spectral library matching the background, and thecombination of other methods such as retention index to identification BTEX(including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o/a/p-xylene and styrene). The researchaimed to establish a headspace GC-MS method for detection BTEX in the industrialadditives. Results and conclusions:1. Contrasting spectral libraries with the instrument alignment, the similarity ofseven kinds of BTEX in standard and samples was less than90%, seven kinds ofBTEX can not be qualitative, but it can provide preliminary results for furthercharacterization. 2. Contrasting self-built standard spectral library, the similarity of benzene inindustrial additives samples was more than90%, it can be qualitative. But the othersix kinds of BTEX are unable to reach a qualitative.3. Contrasting self-built spectral library matching the background, the similarityof benzene, toluene and styrene in industrial additives samples was more than90%,they can be qualitative. The other four kinds of material (ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene) are isomers, they has the similar molecular structure, and easilyretrieval by the same spectrum between the isomers, the four material can not bequalitative.4. Using headspace GC-MS combined with two-column retention index toqualitative identification seven kinds of BTEX in the industrial additives samples. The result of relative standard deviation (RSD) of two-column retention index isbetween0.001%and0.300%, seven kinds of BTEX can be qualitative by usingheadspace GC-MS combined with two-column retention index. In conclusion, The method is simple, fast and high accuracy and does not requirepre-treatment,suitable for identification of benzene series in liquid industrialadditives, provides a reliable method and data support for qualitative analysis ofbenzene series of industrial additives in practical work, and has very importantsignificance.
