In recent years, transmission lines icing leads to many disasters and accidents, such as large area ice flashover, fittings damaged, line dancing, pole (tower) failure, break even large-scale power outages, causing a serious threat to power grid. China is one of the countries which transmission lines icing is serious, so effective disaster prevention of icing is the most important issue to ensure the stable operation and the development of China’s power grid. Now, icing monitoring system most relies on detecting the weather parameters and the changes of dynamic characteristics when icing to early warning, but these methods need additional equipment for data collection. Therefore, in order to ensure the security and reliability of the power grid, studying a safe, effective and economical transmission lines icing monitoring method is of great significance.A new three-dimensional surface method is proposed in this paper to monitoring the transmission lines icing. The signal source of this method is the transient voltage and transient current of the both ends of the lines which obtains by normal switching or reclosing operations of the system, then harmonic analysis, dynamically generating icing monitoring criterion. According to the comprehensive maximum value of the criterion, gives the icing center area of the lines. The criterion of the method equivalent to a mathematical scanner, sweeping from one end of the line to the other side. According to the comprehensive maximum value of the comprehensive criterion makes comprehensive judgments which has a high diagnostic accuracy and reliability. For different icing conditions, this paper makes a lot of simulation, and the results preliminary confirms the validity and reliability of the method. The proposed method in this paper does not require additional hardware devices, without changing the wiring of the system, simple and practical, and has a strong operability.
