With the rapid development of steel industry, the amount of iron ore mined isincreasing, and more and more tailings are discharged. The handling of solid waste hasbecome a heavy burden of many mining companies, and the comprehensive utilizationrate is less than20%. Among of construction products which have a utilization of solidwaste of iron mines, ceramists made from solid waste of iron mines is one of the itemsthat have the large use and great economic and social benefits. The iron tailings were used as main raw material, and fly ash as accessories toprepare the ceramists. The effects of raw material’s fineness and proportion andcalcining system on the properties of ceramists were studied, and identified the properratio of ceramists and calcining system. The mix design of concrete with the ceramistswas designed, and the strength of the concrete was tested. The results show:1. It’s feasible to make ceramists using the iron tailings as main raw material. Thesuitable preparation program of ceramists that the density rank is900kg/m~3show asfollow: the ratio of raw materials: iron ore tailings/fly ash=75/25(wt%); calcinationtemperature is1140℃and calcination time is10min. Ceramists prepared according tothis program have the following properties: the packing density is876kg/m~3, cylindercompressive strength is5.2MPa, water absorption in1h is0.3%and grain shape factor is1.3.2. The smaller raw material degree fineness, the smaller apparent density and thelower strength of ceramsites.3. With the increasing of fly ash content of raw materials, the density of ceramistsis reducing, and the change of strength is when fly ash content change10%to20%,particle intensity rapidly decreases; from20%to30%, the ceramsite strength changeslittle.4. When the calcinations temperature is low, the calcination is not complete, so thestrength of the ceramists is too low. But when the calcinations temperature above acertain value, with the increasing of calcination temperature, and the prolonging ofcalcinations time, the density and strength of ceramsite gradually decrease. 5. Lightweight aggregate concrete prepared with the ceramists meets therequirement of design strength.
