Road construction in China has developed tremendously after reform and open tothe word, the number of road tunnel is increasing and the scale of road tunnel is largerand larger. The road tunnel comes forward in great numbers, brought a new opportunityand challenge for geotechnical engineering. In numerous problems still need solving orimproving of geotechnical engineering, the rock classification is one of the importantresearch projects.For surrounding rock classification of road tunnel, because the constitutive relationbetween indexes of surrounding rock classification and grade of surrounding rock hasnot been established, engineers’ experience will have a great influence on the results ofsurrounding rock classification. There are lots of surrounding rock classificationmethods at home and aboard, and there is no unified standards for rock classification atpresent, the indexes of every surrounding rock classification method are different, sousing different surrounding rock classification methods will cause different results. Inrecent years, with the development of artificial intelligence technology (AI), and moreand more AI technology is used in geotechnical engineer, apply expert systemtechnology to surrounding rock classification will be a new way.In view of above problems, on the basis of previous studies, this paper tries tobuild a expert system consists of several surrounding rock classification methodsadopting object oriented technology and artificial intelligence technology, this expertsystem can provide effective references for surrounding rock classification in practicalengineering. The specific work is as follows:①Introduce the definition of expert system, the difference between expert systemand other computer software briefly. Summarize the basic structure of expert system,the main technical about knowledge base and inference engine.②Collecting and researching the surrounding rock classification methods whichare used most widely at home and aboard. According to the theory of fuzzy mathematics,establish fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method which is applied to surrounding rockclassification. Accord to the classification indexes which are used in the selectedsurrounding rock classification methods, establish a universal index system ofsurrounding rock classification.③Build road tunnel surrounding rock classification expert system, it mainly includes the following contents: Extract rules from the selected surrounding rockclassification methods, and according these rules to build knowledge base. Chooseinference method and control policy, write codes for inference engine. Build a caselibrary for expert system, design inference engine for case retrieving. Design a friendlyand practical human-computer interface of the expert system.④Take TieYing tunnel for example, test the performance of expert system.
