Dry gas seal is a new type of non-contacting seal developed on the basis of a commonmechanical seal. Because of its operation without any abrasion, low consumption, little leakage,long life, high reliability, etc, dry gas seal has been used widely in chemical industry, refinery,ethylene, gas delivery and other industries. Dynamic pressure groove shape of the seals hasbeen the main direction of dry gas seal performance research. This thesis explores a new kind ofdynamic pressure groove dry gas seal structure——the combined spiral groove. Study on theleakage characteristics of the combined spiral groove dry gas seal by combining the FLUENTto simulate the numerical with experimental method. Geometry parameters of the combinedspiral groove dry gas seal under the minimum leakage were obtained by the method of using theFLUENT software to simulate and orthogonal experiment(hg1=5, hg2=5, δ1=0.3,δ2=0.25, γ1=0.2, γ2=0.1).Through the single factor method, the leakage of the combinedspiral groove dry gas seal and the spiral groove dry gas seal were analyzed under the differentstructural parameters. The structural parameters effect of the two type of grooves dry gas sealswere investigated. The results show that the combined spiral groove dry gas seal’s leakagecharacteristics is better than that of the spiral groove dry gas seal. Using Visual Basic6.0,AutoCAD secondary development program and the parameterized model of the combined spiralgroove dry gas seal were established. A set of new type of dry gas seal performance test devicewas designed and made. The leakage characteristics experiment of the combined spiral groovedry gas seal were conducted. The results show that the changes of leakage of the combinedspiral groove dry gas seal with different structural parameters is in accordance with thesimulation value. The leakage of the combined spiral groove dry gas seal was increased with thegroove-ridge width ratio and revolving speed. The reason of the error between experiment valueand simulation value was indicated.
