Based on a large number of domestic and foreign relevant literature, real-life fatigue tests of steel beams for Gang-Zhu-Ao bridge, detailed as well as full-scale orthotropic steel deck finite-element models established via ANSYS and the finite element analysis of those models, the paper accomplishes the following.1) Starting with a historic review of the development of orthotropic steel deck, current state of the research on fatigue problems of orthotropic steel deck is introduced. Then the basic theories and methods relate to fatigue of steel bridges are reviewed.2) Using the fatigue tests of steel beams for Gang-Zhu-Ao bridge as an engineering background, the computation of load spectrum and fatigue detail for the bridge is briefly reviewed, which serves as a theoretical basis for the finite element simulation in this paper.3) For further study on above research test, detailed as well as full-scale orthotropic steel deck finite-element models are established via ANSYS. Then the optimal design for section parameters are performed and finally the optimal model which has the most ideal mechanical properties is obtained.4) Based upon finite element simulation results, the possible future development of optimal design for the sections of orthotropic steel deck is briefly investigated.
