In the current Chinese seismic codes"no damage under minor earthquakes, repairableunder moderate earthquakes,no collapse under severe earthquakes" seismic fortificationcriterion can basically ensure the safity of structure.But it may result in shock structurenormal loss of function caused economic losses.In order to strengthen the security objectivesof the seismic,improve the anti-seismic function, to meet the security needs of differentowners, the international community began to study and application of performance-basedseismic design method.The performance-based design method has caught attention in engineering.In the seismicdesign of tall building structures beyond the code-specification the performance-based designmethod is an available counter-measure to guarantee the reliability of the seismic design, toensure the earthquake safety of tall building structures, and to promote the development of theadvanced technology for high rise building.On the basis of extensive domestic and international documents, this article describes thedevelopment and current status of the performance-based seismic design and carry out theperformance-based seismic design of A tall buildings beyond the code specification inZhongshan.Though the finite element analysis software Midas building and ETABS toanalysis the elastic capacity calculation under minor earthquakes and elasto-plastic dynamicanalysis under minor moderate and severe earthquakes.According to the calculation resultsand the conceptual design method,make an appropriate strengthening of critical and importantcomponent to ensure the structure’s ductility under earthquakes.The results concluded from the research showed that,performance-based seismic designis a supplement to the current seismic fortification criterion of Chinese seismic codes and asuitable design method of tall building structures beyond the code-specification.
