With the rapid development of Chinese urbanization, the metropolises are facingproblems both have arisen in the past two hundred years in developed countries andare arising in current China. So urban diseases are increasingly serious. Theout-of-balance of urban space plays a dominant role in urban diseases. That meansChina must respond positively to its economic and social restructuring, as well as itsurban spatial restructuring, so as to achieve the sustainable urban development andcorresponding urban spatial structure. This thesis includes six parts.The first part introduces the research background, targets, values, contents andmethods. In addition, it makes an literature review in urban spatial structure, anddefines the urban spatial structure at last.The second part systematically reviews the important theories and practices ofurban space in developed countries since the modern urban planning was built up.This part is the theoretic basis of research.The third part reviews the evolution and reconstruction of urban spatial structurein China, and summarizes the characteristic and development mode of each period.This part is the factual basis of research.The forth part studies urban diseases in Chinese metropolises from an angle ofurban functional space. It systematically analyzes the problems of urban sprawl andtraffic congestion and discusses current theories under the background of currentChina.The fifth part, bases on general rules of urban space development and maintrends of city development all over the world, discusses development trends ofChinese metropolises.The sixth part discusses some planning measures and policies from angles ofplanning idea, development mode and urban spatial structure, to optimize urbanspace.
