Fire is one of the most frequent and general disasters that endanger public security andsociety development. According to statistics, it is smoke rather than fire itself or hightemperature combustion that imperils humans’ lives. So studies on smoke movement aresignificant in fire studies. This thesis studies smoke movement of fire in passenger traincompartment, providing references to smoke control of general train compartment fire.Passenger Train Compartment of YW25T is studied. A1:1physical model has beenconstructed, on the basis of the real compartment. This thesis mainly studies the discipline ofsmoke movement with fire resource in different position of the compartment, the effect offlow produced by air handling system on the triggering time of smoke detectors. Furthermore, this study has considered setting up smoke control system in the compartment, andnumerically modeled the smoke movement in such case.Field modeling is conducted using FDS. Turbulence is simulated by LES technique andfire resource has been given by HRRPUA.As a result, smoke layer decreases to about1.6m within1min and approaches to thebottom of the compartment within3min. The effect of flow on the triggering time of smokedetectors is not significant. However, when fire broke up at the middle of the aisle, thetriggering time is about a quarter minute later than it occurs in the passenger room, so it issuggested that considerable smoke detectors should be positioned in the aisle to ensure firedetected in time. Finally this thesis may provide references for fire safety design for generalpassenger train compartment.
