Wood-based panel is an ideal material to replace wood, and has been widely applied in interior decoration and furniture manufacture since its low manufacturing cost and high utilization ratio of wood. Due to the raw woody materials and the aldehyde glue used in its manufacturing procedure, the free formaldehyde would exist inside of the Wood-based panel and release to the environment during its life-span ceaselessly, which would cause environmental pollution and threat people’s health.Formaldehyde emission from Wood-based panel has aroused extensive attention. The relevant technical staff has conducted extensive research about the release mechanism of formaldehyde and the control measure, in order to find the right way to reduce formaldehyde emission from Wood-based panel products. There are many ways, such as changing the molar ratio of urea/formaldehyde in the adhesive, adding formaldehyde scavengers and so on, to reduce formaldehyde emission from Wood-based panel products. However, these methods are unfit for large-scale promotion in industrial production, since either their inaccurate control or their excessive cost.In this paper a serial of experiments were conducted to study the feasibility, the treatment process and effect of formaldehyde reduction from Wood-based panel by using ammonia treatment, which can proliferate into the interior of Wood-based panel and react with formaldehyde. Based on the experiments, a set of equipment was designed to deal with the Wood based panel by ammonia.This research mainly includes the following two aspects:1. Experiments were conducted to study the method of using ammonia to reduce the formaldehyde release from Wood-based panel, and explore the effect of ammonia in different technological condition. The results show that using ammonia to deal with the Wood-based panel can effectively reduce the emission of formaldehyde. With the longing of Ammonia concentration and treatment time, the formaldehyde emission from Wood-based panel would be greatly reduced, and the formaldehyde of the disposed plates will occur only modest rebound. So the ammonia treat to the Wood-based panel was an effective way to reduce the release of formaldehyde.2. Based on engineering testing, A ammonia treatment equipment applied in industrial process was designed. The Aldehyde-reducing Equipment include Wood-based panel collection device, Ammonia treatment device, the residual ammonia treatment device. A large number of Wood-based panel can be disposed one-time in this equipment, end gas that were produced in the processing procedure could be recycled though the residual ammonia treatment device. It was not only environmental protection but also lower the cost of treatment.Through these researches on ammonia treatment technology and equipment to reduce free formaldehyde from Wood-based panel, we found a capable way in industrial process to reduce the formaldehyde emission of Wood-based panel with low cost. With the well working and low cost, it provided a new thread and method to reduce formaldehyde in industrialized production of Wood-based panel. A large area of application of this technology would improve the quality of Wood-based panel, cut down the production cost of Wood-based panel, and conducive to the healthy and fast development of Wood-based panel industry in our country.
