Along with the rapid development of China’s economy, infrastructure constructionhad a rapid development, meanwhile, transportation、traffic density and vehicle loadhad substantially increasing, heavy and overloaded vehicles also had an increasingnumber. Considerable part of the existing bridges which especially constructed in thefifties of the last century cannot meet the requirements because of low standard ofeconomic, technology, design and other constraints. With the life approaches as well asthe rapid increasing in traffic volume, the technical condition of some bridges declinedrapidly(mainly carrying capacity, and different degrees of damage)which difficult tomeet the actual traffic demand, and variety of diseases phenomenon occurred;meanwhile the complete demolition and reconstruction of the old bridges which cannotadapted to modern transportation requirements not only funding costly but alsotime-consuming; Therefore, if some effective reinforcement measures can be taken torestore or improve their carrying capacity or prolong the transport services life whichnot only bring huge economic benefits to the country, but also provide full life typeguidelines to the country’s infrastructure.Masonry arch bridge had a long history and made great contributions to the China’sdevelopment. Masonry arch bridge was known to the world because of its load potential,easily obtained, rugged durability, maintenance costs, provincial, beautiful appearance,required less-skilled jobs, low construction costs, simple construction technology. Withthe country’s rapid economic development, more and more masonry arch unbearablecrossings needs which some do need demolish or rebuild, but most of them will be ableto meet the needs of modern traffic after reinforcement treatment, so masonry archbridge reinforcement has become the first choice; Reinforcement has become theoutstanding problems in construction projects. This paper summarizes the currentresults at domestic and abroad and studied of the following aspects of masonry archbridge:①Had a comprehensive and in-depth analysis to the masonry arch bridges diseasesmechanism, summed up the variety of diseases which masonry arch bridge may arisedfrom and elaborated the cause of each disease;②Explored arch bridge reinforcement theory and had a deep analysis to thereinforcement method and principle. ③Proposed main arch transverse prestressed ferrule method and bolt connectionsthicker combined effects method to enhance the main arch carrying capacity and crackresistance which targeted for bridge carrying capacity and itself variety diseases; Raiseddetailed treatment measures to the bridge disease.④This paper conducted overall reinforcement design to an engineering exampleand took advantage of the finite element software MIDAS/Civil to calculate thefull-bridge stress; Used the general-purpose finite element software ANSYS to simulatedetailed analysis. Verified the reliability of the proposed reinforcement method and gotsome useful conclusions.⑤Summarizes the conclusions and presented the issue in the paper still need tostudy, pointed out a few humble suggestions to the Subsequent researchers.
